This guide provides a straightforward approach to spa water care, from first-time startup to everyday maintenance and troubleshooting. It’s designed to help you keep your Bullfrog® Spa water clear, comfortable, and easy to manage—including specific guidance for the FROG @ease® SmartChlor® system.

Balanced spa water protects your spa, supports reliable performance, and ensures every soak is enjoyable. While water care may seem technical at first, it follows a predictable routine when broken into clear steps.

This article covers three essentials: how to start fresh water correctly, how to solve common water problems, and how to care for your spa when using the FROG @ease SmartChlor system.

Startup: How to Prepare Fresh Spa Water

Starting correctly sets the tone for easy water care.

Pre-Fill:

We recommend taking a water sample to your local dealer for testing and/or ask the dealer about local water conditions that may require something specific for local water treatment needs prior to spa filling.     

Step 1: Fill the Spa Correctly

Remove the filter cap and fill the spa through the filter opening until water reaches the proper level. Reinstall the filter and restore power. Circulation and heating will begin automatically.

Step 2: Protect Against Metals and Scale

Add a stain and scale control product with the pumps running. This protects the spa shell and internal components from minerals commonly found in tap water.

This step is especially important for well water or areas with high mineral content.

Step 3: Balance pH

Test the water and adjust pH into the ideal range of 7.4–7.6. Balanced pH keeps sanitizer effective and prevents surface damage.

Step 4: Add Sanitizer

Use either a chlorine or bromine system approved for spas. For granular products, sprinkle directly into the water with pumps running so it dissolves evenly.

Step 5: Establish Your Ongoing System

Once sanitizer is added and holding, continue with either traditional chlorine or bromine care, or transition to the FROG @ease SmartChlor system if equipped.

 

Troubleshooting: Fixing Common Water Problems

Most water issues fall into a few recognizable categories.

Cloudy Water

Common causes include dirty filters, low sanitizer, improper pH, or old water. Clean or rinse filters, shock the spa if needed, adjust water balance, and consider draining and refilling if water age is excessive. For more information, we have a dedicated article for this issue here.

Odors or Strong Chlorine Smell

A strong smell usually means sanitizer is being consumed by contaminants rather than actively cleaning the water. Shocking the spa and correcting pH typically resolves the issue.

Foam and Scum Lines

Foam and buildup are often caused by body oils, lotions, or detergents. Wipe residue from the waterline, clean filters, use spa enzyme products weekly, and avoid washing swimsuits in laundry soap.

Skin or Eye Irritation

This is often due to poor sanitation or sanitizer levels that are too high. Proper testing and consistent sanitizer control usually resolves irritation quickly.

Stains or Scale

Metal staining or scale formation is linked to improper pH, alkalinity, or calcium hardness. Use metal control products and rebalance water chemistry as needed.

 

Using the FROG @ease® SmartChlor® System

The FROG @ease system is designed to simplify spa care by maintaining a steady sanitizer level automatically.

How It Works

The system uses two cartridges:

  • A blue mineral cartridge that lasts about four months
  • A silver SmartChlor cartridge that typically lasts three to four weeks

SmartChlor self-regulates, releasing chlorine only when needed instead of all at once.

Initial Setup

After balancing pH, attach the SmartChlor cartridge to the mineral cartridge, set the dial based on your spa size, and place the floating system in the spa. Remove it during soaking and return it afterward.

Use the SmartChlor test strips to confirm levels rather than standard chlorine strips.

Weekly Care

Check the SmartChlor level weekly, adjust pH as needed, and add stain and scale control. If sanitizer reads low between uses, supplement with a small amount of granular chlorine.

Cartridge Replacement

When the floater turns over, replace the SmartChlor cartridge. When the mineral cartridge is used up and all SmartChlor cartridges are finished, drain and refill the spa and restart the process.
