# Troubleshooting Pillow / Headrest Degradation or Wear
## It is normal for spa headrests to show wear over time due to sanitizer and sun exposure, and normal spa use. It is normal to replace them every few years. However, if headrests fade or degrade more rapidly than normal, there are several things to check.
### Quick Check
- Check for cracking, peeling, bubbling, or discoloration
- Review sanitizer levels and procedures
### Ensure You Don't Inadvertently Damage Headrests by Following These Steps
1. Open cover for 15-30 minutes, at least once a week, to allow built-up gasses to escape
2. Clean pillows regularly with mild soap, rinse with clean water, and dry thoroughly
3. Check water chemistry regularly and DO NOT oversanitize
4. Reduce chemical exposure by leaving your cover open for ~15-20 minutes after a spa shock treatment
5. Remove pillows when not in use (optional)
6. Replace if deteriorated
### Common Causes
- High sanitizer levels
- UV exposure
- Age and wear
### When to Contact Dealer
- Rapid deterioration
- Replacement needed
