2023 Bullfrog Spas (all series) Owner's Manual Quick Guide

Learn how to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and care for your Bullfrog Spa with this comprehensive owner quick guide covering startup, water care, maintenance, and warranty information.

Overview

This guide provides a simplified overview of key ownership topics for Bullfrog Spas, including M Series, A Series, R Series, STIL, and X Series models. Following these recommendations will help maximize performance, water quality, energy efficiency, and the lifespan of your spa.

Getting to Know Your Bullfrog Spa

Depending on the series and model, your spa may include:

  • The JetPak Therapy System®
  • Water features
  • Interior and exterior LED lighting
  • Adjustable therapy jets
  • Specialized foot, wrist, calf, and hip massage jets
  • Integrated ozone systems
  • Optional audio systems
  • Touchscreen or digital controls
  • Energy-saving filtration systems

The equipment compartment houses the pumps, heater, control system, plumbing components, and water care equipment that keep your spa running smoothly.

Filling Your Spa

Always turn off power before filling the spa. Never power the spa while empty, as serious damage to pumps and heaters may occur.

M Series

Fill through the opening behind a JetPak by lifting the headrest and SnapCap assembly. Fill until the water reaches the water level indicator or midpoint of the filter intake grate.

A Series, R Series, X Series, and STIL

Remove the filter cap and place a garden hose inside the filter chamber. Fill to the designated water level indicator. Once filled, reinstall the filter components.

After filling:

  • Inspect the equipment compartment for leaks.
  • Verify fittings are secure.
  • Install and lock the spa cover.
  • Confirm proper water level before restoring power.
Starting Up Your Spa

After restoring power:

  1. Allow the control system to complete its startup process.
  2. Prime all pumps immediately after filling.
  3. Verify water flow from all associated jets.
  4. Ensure no error messages appear on the control panel.

Pumps should never run without water flow for more than two minutes. If a pump fails to prime after several attempts, shut off power and contact your authorized dealer.

Spa Controls and Operation

Control systems vary by spa series, but most provide access to:

  • Temperature adjustment
  • Jet controls
  • Lighting controls
  • Audio controls (if equipped)
  • Water care settings
  • Maintenance reminders
  • Standby mode
  • Lock functions
  • Filtration schedules
  • Energy-saving settings

Most modern Bullfrog control systems also allow display rotation for easier viewing while seated in the spa.

Water Care Modes

Bullfrog spas include several factory-programmed water care settings.

Standard / Beginner

Maintains the spa at the desired temperature and keeps it ready for use at any time.

Energy Saving

Reduces heating during weekday daytime hours while allowing normal heating during evenings and weekends.

Super Energy Savings

Factory default mode designed to provide maximum energy efficiency while maintaining normal filtration schedules.

Weekender

Designed for owners who primarily use their spa on weekends.

Away Mode

Lowers energy consumption during vacations or extended periods without use.

Water Care Basics

Proper water chemistry is essential to protect spa equipment, ensure bather comfort, and maintain clean water.

Recommended Water Balance

  • Total Alkalinity: 125–150 ppm
  • pH: 7.4–7.6
  • Chlorine: 3–5 ppm
  • Bromine: 3–6 ppm

Test the water regularly and make adjustments as needed to keep values within these ranges.

Water Care Best Practices

  • Test water several times each week.
  • Maintain proper sanitizer levels.
  • Shock the water weekly or after heavy use.
  • Add stain and scale preventative products when appropriate.
  • Use water clarifier if water becomes cloudy.
  • Run pumps with the cover open after adding chemicals.

Important Sanitizer Warning

Bullfrog recommends granular chlorine (Dichlor) or granular bromine.

Never use trichlor chlorine tablets. Their low pH and high concentration can damage spa surfaces and equipment and may void warranty coverage.

FROG® @ease® Water Care System

Many Bullfrog spas are compatible with the FROG @ease water care system.

The system combines:

  • A mineral cartridge
  • A SmartChlor® cartridge

Benefits include:

  • Lower chlorine levels
  • Simplified maintenance
  • Cleaner water
  • More consistent sanitizer levels

SmartChlor cartridges typically last several weeks depending on usage. Mineral cartridges should be replaced approximately every four months.

Filter Maintenance

M Series

M Series spas use Simplicity filters designed to be replaced approximately every four weeks or as needed.

A Series, R Series, X Series, and STIL

Clean filter cartridges every 3–6 weeks depending on usage and water conditions.

Replace filters when cleaning no longer restores performance. Always use genuine Bullfrog replacement filters when possible.

Never operate your spa without properly installed filters.

JetPak Therapy System

The JetPak Therapy System allows you to customize your massage experience.

JetPaks can be:

  • Interchanged
  • Repositioned
  • Personalized
  • Adjusted for water pressure

To increase pressure, turn the JetPak valve counterclockwise.

To decrease pressure, turn the valve clockwise.

Additional adjustable therapy jets throughout the spa can also be customized to your preferred massage intensity.

Changing Spa Water

As spa water ages, dissolved contaminants accumulate and become more difficult to manage.

Bullfrog recommends changing the water every 1–4 months depending on:

  • Usage frequency
  • Number of bathers
  • Water chemistry
  • Maintenance habits

When changing water:

  1. Turn off power.
  2. Drain the spa completely.
  3. Clean shell surfaces and JetPaks.
  4. Refill using the recommended filling procedure.
  5. Rebalance and sanitize the water before use.
Spa Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps preserve appearance and maximize equipment life.

Ongoing Maintenance

  • Test water chemistry regularly.
  • Clean filters on schedule.
  • Remove debris from the spa floor.
  • Clean waterline buildup.
  • Inspect the cover and cover locks.
  • Check equipment compartments for unusual conditions.

Headrest Care

Clean headrests using mild soap and water. Periodically use a non-petroleum conditioner to help preserve appearance and flexibility.

Cover Care

The spa cover is essential for both safety and energy efficiency.

Best practices include:

  • Keep the cover secured when not in use.
  • Remove excessive snow accumulation.
  • Clean monthly.
  • Allow the cover to air dry after cleaning.
  • Apply approved fabric protectants when necessary.

Never stand, sit, or place heavy objects on the cover.

Extended Periods of Non-Use

Two to Six Weeks

  • Reduce the temperature setting.
  • Continue maintaining water chemistry.
  • Have someone periodically verify proper spa operation.

Longer Than Six Weeks

  • Activate Away Mode.
  • Consider winterization if regular maintenance cannot be performed.
Winterization

If the spa will not be used during freezing temperatures:

  1. Drain the spa completely.
  2. Open JetPak valves.
  3. Vacuum water from plumbing lines.
  4. Remove pump drain plugs and loosen unions.
  5. Clean the shell and filters.
  6. Secure the cover.
  7. Remove snow accumulation throughout the winter.

Proper winterization helps prevent freeze damage to plumbing and equipment.
